Sustainability and beyond

Sustainability is no longer enough – we need restorative actions, taking us back into a safe operating space where social foundations are met – where people and nature can thrive.

Developing and operating a sustainable business is crucial for atNorth. Building on our existing sustainability strategy, atNorth is now expanding focus, goals, and priorities with the ambition of becoming both sustainable and regenerative.

Our updated strategy will be framed by the planetary boundaries and social foundations and deployed via three strategic pillars: planet, people, business conduct.

Covers our impact on nature and the environment.

Covers those employed at atNorth, the local communities where we operate, and people along our value chain.

Covers the management of our internal and external business functions.

atNorth’s data center blueprint for the future

atNorth is developing a blueprint for the future of our business and our surrounding environment. This blueprint will be our compass for becoming a sustainable and restorative business.

I’m thrilled that our quest to source low carbon power has led us to Iceland. This partnership with atnorth allows us to bring the concentrated energy demand of compute infrastructure directly to the source of clean, renewable geothermal and hydro energy.

Frequently asked questions

What is atNorth’s mission in terms of sustainability and data center infrastructure?

atNorth’s overarching mission is to be the decarbonization partner of choice, delivering sustainable, full stack data center infrastructure that contributes to a more sustainable planet.

Do you build your data centers with sustainability in mind?

Across our sites, we prioritize the use and reuse of materials with lower carbon footprints in our buildings, such as the use of glulam, a natural structural material that can be used as an alternative to steel or concrete. Glulam is made with wood from sustainable forests where the manufacture, distribution and treatment all consume less energy than other building materials.

Does atNorth have a sustainability process or policy in place?

Sustainability is one of the company’s strategic pillars, outlining goals to further strengthen our sustainability journey in all our operations. Our 2024 Sustainability Report provides an in-depth look at how atNorth is redefining the future of data centers.

Do you use renewable energy to power your data centers?

atNorth’s Nordic locations ensure that all our sites are powered by renewable energy sources. Two-thirds of electricity produced in the Nordics comes from renewable resources and the entire region is on track to become fully carbon neutral by 2050, with some countries setting ambitious targets to achieve this by 2035.
