End of year blog by atNorth CEO Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson
As the year draws to a close, it’s a perfect time to look back on our journey – the milestones we have achieved and the exciting groundwork we continue to lay for the future.
2024 has been a year of extraordinary growth and remarkable transformation for atNorth. From innovative projects like our new Danish mega site, DEN02, to strategic hires that support our growth, we’ve leaned into every opportunity to embrace our vision to deliver ‘More compute for a better world’. Our focus on customer success, environmental responsibility, and full-stack solution enablement has not only set us apart but has also allowed us to deliver meaningful value to our clients, partners, and communities.
Expanding our Nordic Footprint
As I reflect on the past year, I am reminded of our company’s commitment as we continue to forge our path as the Nordic leader in sustainable, full-service data center operations. One of our goals is to have a data center footprint in each Nordic country so that we can continue to support our customers and meet capacity demands.
Working towards this, in 2024, we announced the expansion of ICE02 and ICE03 to continue to support sustainability initiatives and innovation in liquid cooling and heat reuse. We also announced our biggest campus to date: DEN02 in Ølgod Denmark. This new mega data center will be specifically designed for data intensive businesses that run AI and HPC workloads and more innovatively, will have the ability to implement heat reuse for large scale industrial greenhouses as well as to provide heating for the surrounding community.
Standing By Our Word
As a company, we are making huge strides, achieving exactly what we’ve set out to do. Throughout 2024, we have won multiple awards including the ‘Colocation Provider of the Year’ at the Electrical Review & Data Centre Review Awards, ‘Digital Infrastructure Project of the Year’ at the Tech Capital Awards and HPC Wire Readers’ Choice award – the latter two for our work with Shearwater Geoservices. Our CFO, Eva Soley Guðbjörnsdottir, was honored to be named in Tech Round’s 50 Women in Tech and to win the Women in Green Business Awards.
Beyond awards and accolades, we have worked extremely hard to achieve the ISO 45001 certification recognizing our commitment to employees and the workplace. We were also proud to see our CSMO Fredrik Jansson contribute to the second volume of Greener Data. His chapter discusses how innovation, customers and consumers will fuel the greener data movement and create a lasting, sustainable legacy for our children. The multi-author, visionary book is an excellent read for all of us who are passionate about our industry and reducing carbon emissions.
In addition, we were thrilled to be invited to speak at DataCloud Global in June of this year, where our CSO Anders Fryxell, CFO Eva Soley, and myself discussed some of the key trends impacting our industry, including the incalculable demand for scale and rapid growth and its far-reaching impact of digitalization as AI and HPC challenge capacity, location and green computing needs.
Our People Drive Our Success
Of course, our business success would not be possible without our people. As we grow and expand, we’ve been fortunate to attract some of the industry’s best talent. 2024 has seen impressive growth across our leadership team, highlighted by the hire of Anna Kristín Pálsdóttir as Chief Development Officer, as well as other key hires across the business, from sales to operations and beyond.
With these successes under our belt, we’re excited for the year ahead. But for now, together with the whole of our team – from the US and UK to the Nordics and Spain – I’d like to thank all our valued customers and partners, and everyone who has been involved in moving the needle for atNorth this year. Your collaboration and support have been instrumental in helping us meet the demands of today’s digital economy with sustainability, innovation, and excellence at the core of our business.
