It’s a Wrap: 2023 Goes Down in History for atNorth
by Magnus Kristinsson, CEO, atNorth
It was about this time last year I remember thinking to myself, we are on the cusp of a huge year. At the time, we had the momentum of another successful year and were plowing ahead with our vision to power the data center industry from the Nordics, provide our customers and partners with a purpose-fit full-stack solution to meet growing data demands, and deliver more compute for a better world sustainably.
Fast forward to today, and I can say with certainty that this has been a massive year for atNorth. As part of our 2022 strategy, we set the goal of becoming the Nordics’s largest data center platform; since then, we have not taken our foot off the pedal. This year alone saw huge strides in our market presence across the region. Our third campus in Iceland, ICE03, is now fully operational with a future planned extension to the site. We also acquired two existing facilities and have two further developments underway in Finland, with a total capacity potential measured in a couple of hundred MWs. We added another site in Sweden and have a new 30 MW site planned for development in Copenhagen, Denmark.
From January to date, we have appointed 12 new hires into senior roles across the business from the UK and US to Finland, Iceland, and Sweden as we continue to broaden our talent pool from industry veterans to skilled sector specialists. We now have a 100-plus-strong global workforce to support our rapid growth and help us better serve our partners and customers who rely on our data centers to scale with their growing computing, capacity, and sustainability needs.
In July of this year, our revenue hit an all-time high as we experienced a 44% increase from 2021. We followed this by successfully acquiring Gompute, a leading HPC provider. From the very start of the acquisition process, we knew this move would form a crucial part of our growth strategy in the Nordics. Gompute has spent decades running incredibly sophisticated high-performance computing for some of today’s largest global organizations. By bringing Gompute’s tech, innovation, and skilled teams into the atNorth family, we can continue to provide our customers with a compelling full-stack offering tailored to HPC and AI workloads.
In addition to all of this, one of the more exciting outcomes of this year has been the recognition of our hard work from the outside in. We are proud to have achieved the ISO14001 certification last spring while being nominated for more than ten awards across the data center, energy, and sustainability sectors and winning the TechCapital Awards.
It has been an incredible journey, one that we aim to keep adding bigger, better stops along the way. Of course, it hasn’t been without hard work and maybe some blood, sweat, and tears. But, at atNorth, we know that success does not come without hard work, but that this also does not come without having fun at the same time.
I am looking forward to next year, when I know we will be busy further expanding our Nordic footprint, onboarding new customers, and building solid customer and vendor relations.
So, a big thanks to all our atNorth family – from our employees and suppliers to our customers and partners. Our promise to you is our continued dedication to being the decarbonizing partner of choice for the world’s most demanding workloads. But, for now, I wish you all Happy Holidays, and here’s to 2024!
